Buwanha Mentoring: On-Country Camps & Strong Pathways Growing Impact in 2026

Bawamarra Cultural Services

Feb 8, 2026

Over the past months, Bawamarra Cultural Services has been honoured to deepen the reach and impact of the Buwanha Mentoring Framework, strengthening identity, wellbeing, and belonging for young people through culturally grounded pathways of support.

At the heart of this work are two key delivery models that reflect our belief in relational accountability, cultural authority, and lasting change:

🔸 On-Country Mentoring Camps

Our On-Country camps bring young people together in small cohorts to learn, reflect, and connect in Country, guided by cultural practice, shared responsibilities, and deep listening. These immersive experiences support young people to build emotional regulation, strengthen cultural identity, and grow connection to safe Aboriginal role models and community.

Across recent camps, we’ve seen young people:

  • deepen their sense of cultural pride and belonging

  • build new skills in regulation, collaboration, and leadership

  • strengthen connections with mentors, Elders, and peers

These camps are more than experiences, they are spaces where young hearts, minds, and spirits are seen, heard, and supported to grow.

🔸 Buwanha Strong Pathways; In Schools and Educational Settings

Alongside ongoing one-to-one mentoring and structured weekly sessions, the Buwanha Strong Pathways program has been delivered in partnership with schools, offering a term-based cohort model that supports engagement, regulation, and connection for young people at risk of disengagement or system involvement.

Delivered through small group sessions, cultural learning, movement, reflective practice, and mentoring, Strong Pathways has supported increased:

  • school participation and engagement

  • emotional regulation and behaviour confidence

  • cultural identity and peer support

  • connection between families, school teams, and mentors

This program continues to grow in response to community requests and funding partnerships, offering a structured way for schools and agencies to support young people through a culturally anchored framework.

Walking with Partners & Community

Buwanha mentoring continues to be delivered in close partnership with caseworkers, carers, educators, and families, ensuring support around the young person is coordinated, safe, and culturally grounded.

We’re grateful for the trust of organisations across sectors including education, OOHC, justice, and NDIS settings, and we look forward to expanding these pathways further in 2026.

What’s Next

Later this year, Bawamarra will continue delivering:

🌿 On-Country camps

📘 Structured mentoring cycles

🤝 wraparound partnership collaborations

🧠 cultural capability support for partner organisations

We will share learnings, reflections, and outcomes here on the News page, because the work of cultural healing is collective, not individual.

Reflection from Jason May, Founder

“Buwanha is more than a program, it’s a movement of relational care, cultural affirmation, and deep listening. When young people are seen in their strength, their identity becomes a source of courage and connection.” — Jason May

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the many Countries across this land, and the wisdom woven through their enduring connection to land, sea, sky, and spirit. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and honour the custodianship that continues today. Bawamarra walks in deep respect — Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.
